IN WHICH SASHA DOES HER THING, TO THE BEWILDERMENT OF ALL

“You know that bad feeling I had earlier? Well, it’s gotten a hundred times worse.”

Drake, standing next to me, watched with narrowed eyes when the former demon lord Magoth strolled into the large conference room of a Paris hotel. “Magoth does have that effect on people,” he said, but I heard a thread of concern in his voice that had me taking his hand.

He glanced at me, aware that the gesture was mostly for comfort, but also to show him support since the news we anticipated wasn’t particularly good.

“Do not fret, kincsem,” he said softly, his fingers squeezing mine gently.

“I’m going to do a whole lot more than fret if Jim doesn’t show up in the next thirty seconds,” I said just as softly before releasing Drake’s hand and saying loudly as I stomped forward, “Magoth, where’s my demon?”

“May, my sweet one—” Magoth started undulating his way over to where May stood with Gabriel, but stopped when I whipped up a binding ward and flung it on him. “What is this outrage? I am a demon lord, one of the seven princes of Abaddon! I will not be treated thusly. You, green dragon, control your woman!”

“Oh, you do not talk over me like that,” I snapped, stopping in front of him, my hands on my hips, and the meanest look I could muster on my face. In a couple of strides, Drake was at my side, since he is in überprotection mode now, and looked with magnificent menace at Magoth. “I am a Guardian, which you know well since I went into great detail about everything I would do to you if you mistreated Jim after I temporarily signed it over to your care. Where is it? Has it stopped to get something to eat? Please don’t tell me you let it go to that horrible butcher two streets away that carries horsemeat. I’ve told Jim that it is confined strictly to those meats that I don’t find personally repugnant, not that I don’t find most everything but chicken fried rice repugnant these days, but that’s just pregnancy hormones.”

“Guardian, I demand that you unbind me,” Magoth said with lofty disdain. His black-eyed gaze was haughty one moment, then suddenly switched into one of simmering seduction as he eyed me up and down. “Ah, you are with child? How I love a fecund female. They offer so much with so little risk of being obliged to account for offspring. You will soon be too plump to please your dragon, so you would no doubt like me to bring you those experiences that only I can provide, hmm? I have many things that we can do together, some that will bring you to the exquisite pinnacle of pleasure.
